Hakeem Khaaliq is an award-winning film director, producer, visual anthropologist, and cinematographer born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. He is known for his work producing and directing documentaries, music videos, and short films. Khaaliq began his career in the music industry as a music producer and music supervisor for television before transitioning to filmmaking.
Khaaliq has directed and produced numerous documentary films that focus on pressing global issues, as well as working on commercial projects for well-known brands and celebrities, including Adidas, Snoop Dogg, Kobe Bryant, and pop icon Michael Jackson. He has been honored with several awards, including Best of the Fest at the Hip Hop Film Festival, and has spoken at prestigious events such as TEDx, MoMA (Museum of Modern Art), and the Sundance Film Festival. More recently, Khaaliq has been focusing on creative placemaking projects in American Samoa and three southern US states. Additionally, Khaaliq is the great nephew of prominent photographer Addison N. Scurlock and credits longtime family friend Howard Bingham and his mentor Jamel Shabazz as his greatest influences in the visual arts.
